Storms shook up the University of Memphis Campus this past weekend, flooding the campus and causing tornadoes in the Memphis area. Sections of the Art Building, along with roads on campus, were impacted and flooded.
The flood expanded beyond the campus area as the middle sections of N Highland St was completely flooded and caused vehicular damage to drivers who drove through it.
The National Weather Service sent an mass alert to the entire Shelby County area, warning people that if they see flooded roads to should turn around to avoid drowning.
All campus activities after 4 pm were cancelled over the weekend, and the University Center restaurants were shut down, with the exception of the Boost Market. The Student Wellness Center along with all other recreation facilities on campus also closed at 4 pm.
The University of Memphis sent emails twice on last Wednesday night alerting students to a tornado warning affecting parts of Shelby County. Other neighboring counties also had tornado warnings, with confirmed tornadoes in Marshall County and Tate County Mississippi and Grand Junction, Tennessee.
The storms continued into early Sunday morning, giving Memphis areas a break for the rough weather.
