My grandmother always told me that opportunities would come if I kept ‘the main thing the main thing.’ I owe her and the rest of my family for where I am at today.
I have never really written anything of this nature so please bear with me. I am a sophomore Journalism major with an emphasis in Broadcasting. I live in Memphis and am an avid fan of the Grizzlies, Tigers, and Redbirds.
I got my start in journalism mainly from my love of sports. I played sports from a young age and continue to stay active recreationally. Although I never sought out to be a writer at first, I knew I wanted a career path in sports.
I joined the Helmsman staff as a writer during my second semester of my feshman year after taking Professor Candy Justice’s writing class. She persuaded me to join the staff after encouraging me to try it out after reading one of my assignments. At first, I was skeptical (moreso nervousness) as I had never tried anything of the sort before.
Immediately though, I found myself writing on stories on topics that I never would have imagined I would have ever been interested in. After my first semester as a writer, I was awarded the ‘Outstanding News Reporter’ award at the 2024 Memphis JRSM Award ceremony, further boosting my confidence.
Fast forward a calendar year, and I now am the Managing Editor of The Daily Helmsman. I would change nothing about the journey and absolutely love my staff of writers and fellow editors along with the past editors I have had the privilege to work with.
I hope as the Managing Editor of this newspaper to continue to bring engaging, fun, and most importantly truthful news to students and all those who read. Thank you for reading this and allowing me to be your Managing Editor.
