Asian minorities face numerous struggles in American society. However, despite these challenges, many individuals have found ways to push through adversity and achieve success.

On March 25 in the Rose Theatre, the Asian American Association hosted a professional panel, where Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) professors and community members discussed their cultural backgrounds, the obstacles they have faced, and their perseverance in the pursuit of success.

“We wanted to educate people on AAPI individuals and their various cultural experiences,” said Jonathan Bagoyado, a freshman representative for the Asian American Association.

The panel featured several distinguished AAPI speakers, including: Dr. Doyun Koo, an assistant professor of criminal justice at the University of Memphis, Dr. SunAh Laybourn, an assistant professor of sociology, Dr. Jimmy Nguyen, a certified physical therapist and trainer, Dr. Emily Srisarajivakul, an assistant professor of psychology, and Vergenia Villanueva, an IT service operator at the University of Memphis. Each panelist shared their personal journey, highlighting the cultural influences that shaped them and the resilience that led them to their current positions.

“My biggest motivation was the thought that what I am doing is important for the future,” said Dr. Koo. “Even if I got knocked down, I knew this was something that mattered.”

The words of the panelists left a strong impression on the audience, including Asian American Association President LeAnn Sivilay.

“It was very motivational to hear their day-to-day experiences and how they overcame them,” Sivilay said. “It was very touching and eye-opening because it teaches us to be humble.”
