UofM Counseling Services Hosts Seminar on Communication and Conflict Resolution

The University of Memphis' Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) hosted a seminar on communication and conflict resolution at the Ned R. McWherter Library on Wednesday, Feb. 5. Led by UofM Psychology interns Montaya Dawkins-Parham and Deep Patel, the event emphasized the importance of effective communication, active listening, and emotional regulation in resolving conflicts.

The SHCS is a student-focused program that promotes emotional well-being, life skills, and effective decision-making. One of its most well-known services is the Relaxation Zone, a space equipped with massage chairs and a peaceful environment. Located in the University Center, Room 227, and Brister Hall, Room 302, the Relaxation Zone offers students a quiet place to de-stress.

During the seminar, Dawkins-Parham and Patel highlighted key aspects of communication, particularly in high-stress situations. Patel stressed the importance of active listening, noting that, “communication is a two-way street.” He encouraged students to summarize what others say to ensure they feel heard and understood. “When we change our perspective, we can see situations differently,” he added, emphasizing how perception plays a role in conflict resolution.

The seminar outlined a six-step approach to effective communication and conflict resolution:

1. Awareness – Recognize your emotions and reactions.

2. Break – Step away if needed to gather your thoughts.

3. Assumptions – Avoid making assumptions about the other person’s intent.

4. Match – Mirror the other person’s tone and energy appropriately.

5. Attention – Actively listen and focus on the conversation.

6. Breathe – Maintain composure and regulate emotions.

The presenters emphasized that emotions often manifest physically during conflicts, making emotional regulation a crucial aspect of communication. By following these steps, students can navigate disagreements more effectively.

Dawkins-Parham expressed her belief in the power of communication for student success. “It’s very beneficial—it’s what we as therapists are here to do for you all. And we appreciate you,” she said.

The seminar drew a strong student turnout, with participants engaging in discussions and role-playing exercises to practice active listening skills. Attendees were also provided with resources on communication strategies, conflict resolution, and counseling services.

The SHCS offers a variety of programs to support student well-being. Weekly seminars are held every Wednesday at 3 p.m. on the second floor of the library, covering topics such as stress management, relationships, and mental health awareness. The department also maintains a strong social media presence under the handle @UofMSHCS on Instagram, YouTube, X (Twitter), and Facebook. Students can also access SHCS content on Apple Podcasts and the UofM website.

Looking ahead, SHCS is hosting another event, Darty Thursday, on March 6 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the University Center Ballroom. The discussion will focus on safety and sexual health.

Additionally, students can access Togetherall, a free, anonymous peer support platform where they can connect with others and receive confidential guidance directly from their mobile devices.
