University of Memphis NAACP Chapter Hosts Black History Live Museum

Since 1909, the NAACP has been advocating for the rights and equality of African Americans. In honor of Black History Month, the University of Memphis NAACP chapter held The Live Museum.

Started by Clivona Burse ( UofM NAACP VP) in 2017, the Live Museum serves as an opportunity to closely look at the most prolific figures in Black History. UofM students modeled and replicated prominent Black figures as they stood as live statues.

“It felt like the past met the present. It was an amazing experience,”said Noah Williams.

“ It was an exhilarating experience that I would definitely do again. Getting to portray THE Angela Basset was the best thing because I got to learn things about her that I never knew,” said live museum modelJillian McCormick

When asked about her opinion, NAACP member Jaida Hudson said, “ It was good that there were different black role models instead of the most known ones. There were figures modeled from past and present.”

To continue the celebration of Black History Month, The NAACP will host its Mahogany Ball and Freedom Awards on February 21st at the University of Memphis Holiday
