Korean Pop, better known as K-pop, has made a significant impact on American audiences, fostering a loyal and enthusiastic fan base in both South Korea and the United States. However, it can be challenging for fans to find others who share their passion.
At the University of Memphis, the Korean Pop Culture Association (KPCA) is bridging this gap, creating a welcoming space for fans to connect and celebrate their love for K-pop.
“We started the Korean Pop Culture Association just to give a community to those who like K-pop and are interested in Korean social media,” said KPCA President Hannah Fingers.
The association attracts members who are long-time fans of K-pop and those eager to explore the culture further.
“Before I came to college, I bumped into Hannah, and she told me about the club,” said Dwight, a visual arts major and KPCA member. “I attended a couple of events because I never really had a big K-pop community before.”
One of KPCA’s signature events is the K-Pop Random Dance Event. On Nov. 13 at 4 p.m., the club hosted this lively gathering in the Rose Theatre lobby. Participants learned choreography to randomly selected K-pop songs, blending fun with recruitment for the club’s campus dance team.
“We normally host dances because our club members are interested in learning the dances and to recruit for our dance team,” said Fingers.
The event wasn’t just about dancing; it was about creating a sense of belonging.
“In Memphis, it’s hard to find a community for something that’s not the norm,” Fingers said. “That’s why we have this club and events—so we can branch out, meet new people, and have fun.”
Through dance and cultural celebration, KPCA is helping K-pop fans in Memphis find their rhythm and their community.
