Center for Writing and Communication Celebrates 10 Years of Student Success at the University of Memphis

Writing essays or speeches can be challenging for many students, whether due to language barriers or confusion about structure and content. These challenges can leave students feeling hopeless, unsure of how to move forward. Fortunately, the Center for Writing and Communication (CWC) is dedicated to providing support, helping students improve their skills, and assist students in the success of their classes.

“I really enjoy working with students and helping them with their individual needs and desires as far as how they want to grow as a writer and communicator,” said Dr. Meredith Boulden, director of the CWC.

The CWC offers comprehensive services to assist students with writing and communication, including help with essays, speeches, and presentations. The staff, driven by a passion for student success, aim to inspire confidence and foster growth in every individual they assist.

“The reason why we do this is not because we get paid but because there is something so rewarding about helping a student and seeing them have their lightbulb moment,” said Terie L. Box, the 43-year-old Operations Coordinator of the CWC.

On Nov. 12 at 4 p.m., the CWC marked its 10-year anniversary at the University of Memphis with a celebration in its office. The event highlighted the organization’s history, its impact on campus, and testimonials from students who have benefitted from its services. The meeting concluded with snacks and opportunities for attendees to connect.

“I feel like I’ve helped some students turn in a paper that completely missed the mark into something they can be proud of,” said Dr. Box. “Students often don’t have anyone to review their work other than the teacher, and that’s why we’re here.”

For the CWC staff, those “lightbulb moments” are the ultimate reward.

“When someone gets what they need to be successful in their assignment or project, those moments are what you live for,” said Dr. Boulden.

As it celebrates a decade of service, the CWC continues to be a vital resource for students at the University of Memphis, empowering them to overcome challenges and achieve academic success.
