NAACP and BSA Host Vice Presidential Watch Party

The University of Memphis chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Black Student Association (BSA) joined forces and hosted a Vice-Presidential Debate Watch Party on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Governor Tim Walz and Senator JD Vance faced off during the vice-presidential debate, which is more than likely the last debate of the 2024 election season.

The night started off with the NAACP’s political action and juvenile justice co-chair Annorah Flanigan led a game of “Political Trivia” where the facilitators gave facts about former presidents, presidential candidates, administration members, and other faces of political leadership and the crowd had to guess who the person was.

The event started promptly at 8 p.m. CT, hosted by CBS News with moderators Nora O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan. Each candidate would have two minutes to address and answer the question given to them and one minute for a rebuttal. It was a ninety-minute debate with one three-minute break around 9 p.m.

Governor Walz and Senator Vance were asked various questions based off of many different topics such as immigration, climate change, deportation, and personal qualifications.  Candidates were asked questions like “Would you support or oppose Israel launching an attack on Iran?” and “What responsibility would your administration have to the reduction of climate change?”

After the debate finished, there was a debate highlight and analysis discussion to give viewers a chance to give their opinions of what they witnessed.

You can see more from the NAACP and BSA during their mass meetings on Oct. 17 in the UC Shelby Room from 4:30-5:30 p.m. and Oct. 23 in the UC Ballroom A at 5 p.m.
