After the events of Hurricane Milton, the University of Memphis Tigers football team defeated South Florida 21-3.

In a game that was originally scheduled for Friday night in Tampa but moved to Saturday in Orlando, neither team looked particularly sharp.

“Obviously great to come out here and get a win, pleased with the outcome and our defense played phenomenal," said Memphis head coach Ryan Silverfield. "A lot of things to clean up and it starts with me as the head coach.”

The game was low scoring, but the Tigers defense dominated as they held USF to the lowest point total they have scored this season. The Tigers showcased their best defense since the Florida State game by not only holding USF to three points, but only allowing them to have possession of the football for 18 minutes and 18 seconds (18:18).

The Tigers jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter, scoring on their first two offensive possessions.

In the second quarter, running back Mario Anderson Jr. was ejected from the game for spitting at a South Florida defender.

The Memphis offense was unable to produce any scoring drives after Anderson went out, but Chandler Martin recovered a fumble in the end zone to give the Tigers a 21-3 win.

Key Takeaways from the Game

Memphis’ defense did a terrific job and they showcased how they legitimately improved on that side of the ball this season.

With that being said, the Memphis offense struggled getting into a rhythm. Their offense ran into similar problems against MTSU, but the wide receivers played well in the first half which is a positive for Tigers fans.

Memphis most likely would have scored a little more if Mario Anderson was not ejected from the game, which is the team’s go to running back so the offensive side of things should look better in the weeks to come.
