On Friday, Sept. 13, the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music celebrated their 111th season, with performances from The University of Memphis Wind Ensemble, Symphony Orchestra, Piano Studio, Opera, and the Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Singers.

Dr. Nguyen highlighted many of the upcoming partnerships and collaborations the school of music had in the future, including collaborations with Opera Memphis and the University of Memphis Theater Department, while also introducing the upcoming music therapy program.

“It allows us to access students that we didn’t have access to before,” said Nguyen.

The night started off with the University of Memphis Wind Ensemble playing “Dancing Fire” directed by Dr. Nguyen, then transitioned into playing the “University of Memphis Fight Song” directed by Johnny Moore.

The University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra was directed by Dr. Rafael Rodriguez and performed “Suite” from The Royal Fireworks by G.F. Handel and “La Conga del Fuego Nuevo” by Arturo Marquez.

Following the Symphony Orchestra was the Piano Studio, and the Scheidt family. The four children of Rudi and Honey Scheidt talked about their parents' legacy and how the Scheidt School of Music, the students, and the professors kept that legacy alive.
“Continue to tell people what we are doing here, and continue to tell the good story,” said Elkan Scheidt.
The University of Memphis Opera was the next to perform, highlighted by a performance from Katrina Cole, who sang “Frere, voyez…. Du gai solei” from Werther by Jules Massenet.
The Southern Comfort Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Singers finished off the night with four selections including “Sing, Sing, Sing” and “Bitter Jug”, directed by the Director of Jazz Studies, Dr. Jack Cooper.
The next performance at the Scheidt will be “Fire,” played by the UofM wind ensemble and a feature performance from University of Memphis professor of horn Dr. Jeremiah Frederick on Sept. 30 at 7 pm.
