The Botany Club at the University of Memphis is nurturing students' passion for plants and community by promoting an appreciation for plant science and the natural world.
Community gardening helps members make a positive impact together and gives back to the environment in a sustainable way. It also helps combat food insecurity and promote healthy eating for students.
"Our mission is to foster a greater understanding of plants and plant sciences within the University of Memphis community and beyond, cultivating a passion for the study of plants in both our campus and the surrounding area,” said Sam Drewry, president of the club.
Although the organization has not yet started projects with the university garden, the president’s primary goal is to enhance member engagement by creating meaningful and enriching experiences.
“Additionally, community involvement is a key focus for us, with a strong emphasis on organizing volunteer opportunities where our members can make a positive impact together in the community,” says Drewry.
Members also participate in community outreach, collaborating with local schools and nonprofit organizations to promote sustainability and environmental care.
The Botany Club has become a gathering place for students interested in plant science, conservation and
ecological activism, instilling a feeling of community and purpose in its members. Some recent activities that the members have participated in are botany bingo, terrarium building and pot painting.
