Many students at the University of Memphis gathered for an open mic event hosted by Blue Tom Records, the university's student-run record label, on Sept. 18 at the Scheidt Performing Arts Center. The atmosphere was casual and filled with words of encouragement and support from their peers.
The event began with a performance of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition,” which prompted the audience to snap their fingers, bob their heads, and sing along.
Talents from as far as the Bronx, New York, performed. Many different talents from different states, including performers from as far as the Bronx, New York. There were singers, rappers, and even a violin player gracing the stage on Wednesday.
“It’s a form of self-expression,” said rapper Kang, reflecting on the significance of the event for performers.
Amiyah Price, a sophomore at the University of Memphis studying music business, said, “I think people really enjoyed the event and this helped people realize how much talent is sitting next to their peers in the classroom.”
The night featured a variety of acts, such as a cover of “My Heart Will Go On” to a rock band called Degenerate Breakfast. Throughout the event, the audience showed enthusiastic support, cheering on their peers and celebrating a sense of community through music.
