For the seventh consecutive year, the UofM has been acknowledged as one of the top schools that supports and encourages a successful scholastic experience for its military service members.

For 2020, the UofM was nationally recognized for being one of the Top 10 schools on the Military-Friendly Schools list, ranking at no. 9.

Military Friendly is a nationwide data-based site that compiles lists that includes companies, schools, employers, etc. that aid and navigate veterans and active members of the military toward their daily goals.

Memphis offers a variety of programs to ensure that students feel welcomed and supported.

The Veterans and Military Students Services Center acts as a gateway for members to transition effectively, from school to service, and from service to school.

“The Veterans & Military Student Services (VMSS) mission is to ensure you receive full support in your transition from ‘boots to books.’ You served your country, now we have got your back! Our goal is simple. We help you: Get in. Get through. Get out. Get paid,” according to VMSS materials.

Offering multi-student-body organizations such as Yellow Ribbon Programs and three ROTC programs (Army, Navy and Air Force), allows like-minded individuals with similar backgrounds to come together and navigate through school effectively, while making the progression through school occur smoothly.

“The University of Memphis provided a setting for me to mature and grow in my personal and career aspirations,” said UofM alumnus Lt. Quill Brabham. “From my ROTC unit, Detachment 785, to my professors and advisors — each of these entities supported and endorsed by the University of Memphis aided me in reaching my goal as a United States Air Force officer and my future endeavor as a dentist.”

The UofM prepares its students while they are attending college to have long-term post-graduate success — investing time, money and resources into programs that will enhance the student experience, according to VMSS.

“I strongly encourage students and prospects of the University of Memphis to reach out to the military ROTC programs on campus, and especially AFROTC (Air Force ROTC). They will provide an opportunity to secure an honorable career while aiding in your physical and mental fortitude for your collegiate years and future years. Leadership, physical fitness and academic success are all pillars that the AFROTC Detachment 785 have improved and instilled in me. For that alone, I am beyond grateful for them as well as the University of Memphis,” Brabham said.

Memphis continues to provide a hands-on learning experience that can amplify your collegiate journey — committed to educating its students and encouraging them to become the best versions of themselves.

“To sum up my experience in three words it would be: maturation for achievement,” Brabham said. “I choose these words because the University of Memphis serves as the location for organizations and programs that will induce and improve the natural born achiever within you.”

Through programs and partnerships, UofM emphasizes ways to grow their student body and walk with them along the way.

The UofM secured the first institute partnership with Folds of Honor, providing students with the opportunity to receive an annual $5,000 scholarship that will help support the cost of tuition fees.

Folds of Honor is an organization dedicated to serving the community of the military and their loved ones, through financial support through school. Ranging from grade school to grad school, their mission is to support, relentlessly.

The UofM endeavers to close the gap between the interim of college and post-graduation as they continue to connect their students by housing programs for students from each diverse background.
