I don’t believe allowing faculty members to carry a concealed gun on the University of Memphis campus would fix anything. All it would do is give faculty members power over the students and potentially make the campus a more dangerous place.
Still, most students agree with the law in place that allows only faculty members to carry a gun on campus. So, why are only faculty allowed to have a weapon and not law-abiding students with a permit to carry?
I think this law is hypocritical to students. If someone is old enough to obtain a license to carry, then the university should not be allowed to limit who gets to carry their gun or limit where they can take it. The rules should be the same for all concealed gun permit owners. I do not believe some permit owners should be allowed more or less access than others.
The biggest factor, in my opinion, is that gun owners have to get a thorough background check to obtain a license to carry. This means people with felonies on their records will not be allowed to obtain a license to carry. It would only be law-abiding citizens carrying guns legally, and if a felon is caught with a gun, they would be charged with a major felony.
We all have to have a thorough background check done, and we have to take the same gun safety classes, so why should only some permit owners get special treatment?
I conceal carry everywhere I go. But when I am somewhere that does not allow concealed weapons and have to leave my gun at home; I feel naked. I feel exposed.
Last Christmas, a man shot and killed two people during a church service in White Settlement, Texas. Two members of the church security team shot and killed the shooter before he could kill anyone else.
This was an instance in which a permit owner was able to prevent a mass killing before the shooter could kill any more people because he was armed. With the number of mass shootings in the United States rising, how many tragedies can be stopped by an alert permit owner? If all permit owners, not just faculty members, were allowed to keep their firearm on them on campus, there would be trained permit owners all over campus.
I’m not saying there should be more guns on campus. I’m saying it’s hypocritical to allow faculty members to carry guns while not allowing students with a permit to carry a gun on campus as well.
I do not think it is right to allow faculty to carry a gun on campus but not a student with a permit, because it is unfair and unsafe to allow more guns on campus without giving that same right to students. Students would be left with no way to defend themselves if a faculty member turns their gun on a student.
I believe they should either let faculty members and students with a permit to carry on campus or not allow anyone to carry on campus.
