UofM students share their Spring 2020 semester goals

The start of a new semester gives students a chance to improve, adjust, or perfect their habits from the previous semester and potentially add new and unique activities to their schedule.

Some students take the opportunity of a new semester to make sure their grades are in good standing.

"I want to have a 3.5 GPA and keep it going smooth through the semester," said freshman computer science major Ryan Franklin.

DJ Lewis, a junior health science major, said he wants to improve his academic performance this semester.

"I want to make the Dean's List," Lewis said. "I am also going to attend at least 95% of my classes. I have to get better about that."

Junior fashion merchandise major Myrna Herrera also said she wants to make the Dean's List. She said one other goal she has for the semester is to design a piece of clothing.

Other students said they want to engage more in the campus culture, get involved in groups and invest in the lives of students.

"I want to be more open socially," said Ravi Lipman, junior dual biology and political science major. "I want to be more engaged in extracurricular activities. For example, this semester I am the president of the National Society of Leadership and Success."

German exchange student Katharina Kleine-Waecheter said she wants to improve her language skills, writing skills and skills on social media.

"In Germany, my studies are focused on television and social media stands in the background; I want to change that. I want to improve my publishing and English skills," Kleine-Waecheter said.

Kleine-Waecheter said this is her first time ever leaving Europe. She wanted to make a goal to get to learn more about the United States and make lasting relationships during her time in the country.

"Everything here is kind of different, even the license plates on the cars. I'm really excited about this; kind of scared; kind of nervous, but I think it's going to be great,” Kleine-Waecheter said.

Some students said they wanted to make better and stronger connections with the people around them.

"I need to overcome anxieties that prevent me from connecting with people," said junior dietetics and Spanish major Williams Fite.

Logan Love, junior public relations major, said his mission this semester is to spread positivity.

"My goal is just to spread joy and happiness and be happy myself," Love said. "No matter what I do, or how life ends up, as long as I'm happy and I have my sanity, that's all that matters. I feel that as humans and especially as college students in America, we focus so much on school, work, trying to maintain. Just stop sometimes, take a breather."

Love said he is going to take random selfies with people all over campus and start an Instagram page for it.

"On top of that, I wish everybody a 4.0 GPA and that we all make straight A's, but don't let it stress you out," Love said.
