Controversial conservative speaker to give Fake News lecture on campus

The University of Memphis chapter of  political organization, Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), plans to host a seminar with Andrew Klavan,  screenwriter, author and host of the self-affiliated show on The Daily Wire about the controversial hot topic of fake news Thursday.

President of the Memphis YAF chapter and journalism major Grace Baker, who has read and listened to all his material, said he does his job exceptionally well.

“I love his work. I love his opinions,” Baker said. “I think he speaks common sense. He has great opening monologues in all his podcast.”

Andrew Klavan is the author of such internationally bestselling crime novels such as True Crime, filmed by Clint Eastwood, Don’t Say A Word, filmed and starring Michael Douglas and Empire of Lies.

Currently, he hosts “The Andrew Klavan Show,” every Monday through Thursday on The Daily Wire.

Baker said Klavan is an excellent speaker, and she encouraged people to attend. Baker said the seminar would educate the audience on the topic of fake news.

“I think it’s a really hot topic right now with all the news coverage in the world right now,” Baker said.

The lecture is promptly titled “It’s All Fake News.”

Baker said she does expect a huge turn out with the work YAF has put into promotion. The lecture will also be live-streamed through The Daily Wire.

“We have put up four hundred flyers on campus, we’ve posted it all on social media, we’ve had multiple meetings about it, so I feel like we’re going to have a pretty good turnout with the effort we put in,” Baker said. “There will be an open Q and A at the end, which is always a lot of fun.”

Baker said people should attend even if they do not know about Klavan or the event because he is a person of many talents and a good speaker. Baker also said that the speech would not be boring.

“He has accumulated a lot of knowledge over the years, and he’s funny and easy to listen too.” Baker said. “I feel like that would interest anybody of any age.”

The national organization, Young America’s Foundation, is committed to informing young Americans about conservative ideas like individual freedom, a strong national defense, free enterprise and traditional values.

Marketing major John Jennings said he likes Klavan’s work but is not a die-hard fan as others might be.

“I would not call myself a fan, but he is a comical conservative voice that I listen to on occasion when Ben Shapiro is unavailable,” Jennings said.

Fellow podcast host and Editoe-in-Chief at the Daily Wire Ben Shapiro spoke at the UofM last fall in the Rose Teater.

Jennings said Klavan will be a good speaker but thinks he will not resonate with the audience.

“I think he’ll be a great speaker but not a hugely impactful speaker simply because he is not well-known outside of specific conservative circles,” Jennings said.

Jennings said Klavan is a master of political banter and mockery, and he has a gift for giving his case.

“He’s a good thinker, but his major talent is his ability to make you laugh while presenting his argument,” Jennings said. “So, if you enjoy hearing conservatives just eviscerate Democrats in hilarious fashion, then he’s the guy to listen too.”

The Young Americans for Freedom will host Andrew Klavan at a free event on campus. This event will be held at 7 p.m. at the University Center on campus in the Fountain View Round Room.
