St. Patrick’s Day is Mar. 17. Once a religious celebration, the holiday is now more commonly associated with Irish pride.
It may be an Irish tradition, but St. Paddy’s Day is widely celebrated across the United States with corned beef and green beer.
There will be an abundance of Irish pride on Sunday, and luckily, The Daily Helmsman has compiled a complete guide to celebrating St. Patrick’s Day in Memphis.
Midtown
If you want an authentic Irish experience this Paddy’s Day, look no further than the Cooper-Young district in Midtown. Start your day on Sunday with the Cooper-Young St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
The parade is family-friendly and takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. It will feature floats, bands, leprechauns bagpipers and more. This parade is hosted by the Memphis Irish Society and Celtic Crossing and will begin at York Avenue, traveling down Cooper Street to Walker Avenue.
The third annual parade will honor public servants of Irish heritage, including police, firefighters, clergy, teachers and medical professionals.
Once the parade is over, join the many folks who will pile into Celtic Crossing for an all-day Paddy’s extravaganza.
Celtic is the heart of Irish culture in Midtown and will have live bands on the patio, specials on Irish fare, face painting, Irish dancers, bagpipers and, of course, Guinness on tap in the old glass. There will be a $10 cover before 4 p.m., and after that, the cover will be $15. Children are welcome throughout the day but must clear out by the evening.
Railgarten, which is around the corner from Celtic, is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day Throw-Down from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be green Jello shots, music by Drivin N Cryin and Irish spirits to cap off the night.
The Casual Pint
If you want to stay closer to campus but still wish to enjoy the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, the Casual Pint might be the place for you. This Saturday, the Casual Pint is hosting St. Paddy’s Day with Karaoke from 9 p.m. to midnight.
This is a 21+ event with karaoke, food specials, a festive photo booth and 28 craft beers on tap. Attendees will receive $1 off those beers if they are wearing green.
On Sunday, the Casual Pint is hosting a St. Pawdy’s Day Party from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Patrons are invited to dress up their ‘doggos’ and partake in some interspecies ‘St. Pawdy’s Day’ fun on the patio. There will be prizes for the best dressed dog and $1 off pints for people wearing green.
Downtown
This Saturday will mark the 46th Annual Silky O’Sullivan Beale Street St. Patrick’s Day Parade, one of the city’s largest parades. It begins at noon with free admission and is suitable for all ages.
Attendees are encouraged to wear green and can watch live music, dancers, cars, floats, and more during the parade.
If you are finished with the parade and you’re not a fan of the Silky’s crowds, head over to another downtown Irish hub, the Brass Door. The Brass Door typically hosts St. Patrick’s Day festivities, some of which are family friendly.
However you are looking to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, Memphis has something for everybody.
