Valentine’s Day is here and love is in the air. Some buy chocolates, flowers, teddy bears or something dear to their significant other, but candy hearts will not be enjoyed this year.
Necco, the company who created the iconic candy, has been bought out and will not sell the hearts. Fortune reported that Spangler Candy Company took over the rights to the Necco brand and will not sell them until 2020.
Along with their heart-shaped candy with text, Necco also had candy buttons and chalky wafers that were either classic vanilla flavored or chocolate.
Some University of Memphis students were upset about the candy no longer being on shelves, but they were understanding and satisfied that it will be sold again next year.
Bryce Williams, a UofM freshman, was indifferent about the situation but remains hopeful because they are bringing them back.
“It’s kind of sad that they don’t have them this year, but if they’re bringing them back it’s not like the worst thing,†Williams said. “I’m a little indifferent about it.â€
Faith Waggener, a UofM freshman, said the holiday feels weird without the iconic heart-shaped candy.
“It is a little strange since they are not going to have them; I always saw them since I was a little kid,†Waggener said. “Just as long as they bring them back it will be okay.â€
Darian Hayes, a senior criminal justice major at the UofM, said he thinks the candy’s absence is taking away from the holiday.
“I feel like it’s a really terrible idea because it’s such a staple of the Valentine’s Day holiday,†Hayes said. “Even little kids buy someone that they like candy hearts. For them to cancel that, they’re taking some of the culture away.â€
While some students were upset, others did not know the candy hearts will not be included in Valentine’s Day this year.
“This is my first time hearing about it,†said Lauren Childress, a sophomore biology major. “I really don’t know how to feel about it.â€
While Necco Candy Company will no longer be a thing until next year, there is still a way to purchase them. Brach’s Candy Company will continue selling the hearts and they are on sale for $2.69 at Target stores.
