The University of Memphis announced a one-year extension for football head coach Mike Norvell’s contract. Norvell is now locked in as the leader of the program through 2023, reaching the state’s maximum of five years.Â
Tom Bowen, the athletic director, said the move was necessary to show recognition for how well Norvell led the football team.
“We wanted to show Coach Norvell that we appreciate the work he has put into elevating out football program,†Bowen said via a press release. “Back-to-back American Athletic Conference championship game appearances, three strong recruiting classes, with more coming on board tomorrow, and helping our program to an unprecedented five straight bowl appearances deserves a show of support. We are proud to be able to put a year back on his deal and keep him at the maximum five years.â€
The Memphis Tigers have recorded 26-14 over the last three seasons during Norvell’s tenure. Details of this extension were not disclosed. On Tuesday morning, Norvell tweeted a message thanking both the athletics department and the president of the university.
“Grateful to @uofmemphis @UofMemphisPres and @TigersAthletics for the continued support and commitment to our program / staff,†Norvell tweeted. “It’s a [sic] honor and privilege to represent our University and the city of Memphis every single day! We will continue to #KeepCLIMBing in all we do! #TigerFam.â€
Under his leadership, Novell has produced talents that either went on to play in the NFL or are projected to get drafted this coming season, most notably Chicago Bears wide receiver Anthony Miller, who played two years for Norvell. During that time, the Memphis native racked up 2,990 scrimmage yards and 33 touchdowns. Miller was selected by the Chicago Bears in the second round with the 51st pick.
Additionally, running back Darrell Henderson also prospered under Norvell. He received national attention for his outstanding play this past season. Henderson became the second all-time leading rusher in the program’s history, after DeAngelo Williams. He accumulated 1,909 on the ground this season and overall had 4,303 scrimmage yards during his time at Memphis. He is expected be drafted in the third or fourth round in the upcoming draft.Â
Lastly, the Tigers’ former wideout Tony Pollard excelled this past season. He recently participated in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, a good indication he is on various scouts’ radars. Pollard had his best season during his last year at Memphis, totaling 1,010 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. Â
With Memphis locking in Norvell for the next five years, both the football and basketball programs will have stability at the helm. Men’s basketball head coach Penny Hardaway has been hitting the recruiting trail and got the number one player in the country, James Wiseman of East High School, here in Memphis.
Tiger fans will have a lot to look forward to over the next several years with Norvell and Hardaway leading their respective programs. Spring practice for the football team will begin March 16.
