Valentine’s Day is today, and many couples will be looking for the perfect way to celebrate with their partners. Instead of fighting through crowds of people for a tiny table in the back of an expensive restaurant, many couples are choosing a stress-free date night at home with the perfect romantic comedy.
The same romantic comedies dominate BuzzFeed and Variety Top-25 lists every year. No list ever attempts to expand the rom-com brand. There are more movies with romance and comedy that never see the light of a Top-10 list, so I have compiled a list of the Top-7 romantic comedies to watch this Valentine’s Day.
1. Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Jennifer is a high school beauty who becomes possessed with a hunger for a red-hot affair. She begins to work her way through the menu of boys her school has to offer, yet none of them satisfy her hankering. Needy, Jennifer’s nerdy and less popular best friend, stands as the only thing between Jennifer and her appetite for a beefcake.
2. Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965)
This classic cult film features three go-go dancers sailing through the desert, leaving crime scenes in their dust. When the three come across an old man with a hunky son and a fortune, they devise their biggest heist yet.
3. The Shining (1980)
Jack moves his wife, Wendy, and son, Danny, out to a picturesque hotel for the winter, hoping he can finish his book. The family gets closer than ever when they are snowed in with no contact with the outside world. After Jack abandons his book, Wendy gets a glimpse at what’s under her husband’s icy exterior.
4. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
After his wives go missing, Immortan Joe and his army trek across the desert in hopes of finding them. Meanwhile, Imperator Furiosa goes on a search for her family and meets Max along the way. The pair develop such a close relationship, they do not even need to use words to communicate.
5. Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie is the average high schooler. He enjoys guns in empty fields and commenting on the social infrastructure of the Surfs. Things take a turn for the interesting when he finds himself falling for the girl next door. The only question: How is he going to introduce her to the 6-foot bunny he sometimes sees?
6. Les Misérables (2012)
Marius and Cosette immediately fall in love after they lock eyes in the market on the streets of Paris, the most romantic city in the world. Their love blossoms despite Eponine, Marius’ best friend, realizing she has feelings for him and despite Cosette’s father attempting to move her away from Marius.
7. Heathers (1988)
The Heathers clique is the most popular clique in town, and Heather Chandler, the reigning queen of the Heathers, tries her hardest to humiliate her classmates. One day, former Heather member Veronica decides she’s had enough of Heather. She makes a plan to take down the bullies in her school one by one with her boyfriend.
