There is no reason to get spooked because there are plenty of events to attend in Memphis this coming week for Halloween. Whether it be scares, thrills or laughs, the Bluff City has plenty of on-theme holiday activities to offer. Here is a list of eight events, on and off campus, happening from Oct. 26 to 31.
1. Celebrate Halloween with the International Student Association
The International Student Association is hosting their second annual International Halloween Party on Oct. 26 in the Michael D. Rose Theatre.
Alejandro Gil Torres, president of the International Student Association, said the purpose of the event is to give international students a chance to experience Halloween and make friends.
“We noticed a lot of the new international people did not know anyone yet or hadn’t experienced Halloween ever before,” Torres said. “So it was a great way to show them what Halloween is and to make some new friends.”
The event will start at 7 p.m. It is free to attend, and there will be free food, tricks, treats and prizes.
2. Get lost in the Mid-South Haunted Corn Maze
Visitors to the Mid-South Corn Maze can wander through a haunted version of the maze from 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27 as well as Halloween night.
The haunted version includes ghosts, ghouls and goblins roaming through the maze and attempting to scare guests as they wander through it. For those who want a more normal maze experience, there is a non-haunted version during the day.
Admission is $15 and is cash only.
3. Shoot zombies with paintballs at Memphis Zombie Hunt
For those looking for a more hands-on Halloween, there is Memphis Zombie Hunt. Guests can ride in the back of an army truck and shoot “zombies” with truck-mounted paintball guns Oct. 26 and 27 from 7 to 10 p.m. both days.
Admission is $22 and includes 125 paintballs. Refills of 125 paintballs cost an extra $10.
4. Visit the Sigma Phi Epsilon Haunted House
The fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, in partnership with Up ‘til Dawn, is hosting a haunted house from 7 to 11 p.m. Oct. 26 to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Dalton Garrett, vice president of programming for Sigma Phi Epsilon, said each sorority chose a theme and decorated a room.
“Each Panhellenic sorority decorates their own room and chooses a different theme with the help of two Sig Ep coaches,” Garrett said. “Having different themes within the house is something unique to Sig Ep’s Haunted House.”
The haunted house will be at 3586 Midland Ave., and the entrance fee is $10.
5. Walk through Wicked Ways Haunted House
For a good scare, Wicked Ways Haunted House, the largest haunted house in Memphis, will be open Oct. 26 through 28 and on Halloween.
The haunted house has multiple stages, taking guests through an underground army bio-hazard containment base, a sewer system filled with mutants, an old house filled with escaped test subjects, a home inhabited by a cannibalistic family and a torture chamber.
A spokesperson from Wicked Ways Haunted House said the purpose of the haunted house is to raise money for St. Jude and local animal shelters.
The haunted house is located at 160 Cumberland St. and is open from 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 26, 7 to 10 p.m. Oct. 27 and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Halloween night. Admission is $22.
6. Experience “Ghostbusters” at the Pink Palace
The Pink Palace will be playing “Ghostbusters” in their IMAX theater Oct. 27 and Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. both days. Tickets are $10. Ghostbusting outfits and equipment are encouraged but are not required.
7. See “Night of the Living Dead” in the Library
There will be a showing of the classic horror movie “Night of the Living Dead” at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 in the Ned R. McWherter Library. This showing is part of the library’s ongoing NEDFLIX Fall Film Festival. It is free to attend, and there will be free food.
8. Watch “Hocus Pocus” in the Recreation Center
The Residence Hall Council and Campus Intramural Services will host a showing of “Hocus Pocus” in the Recreation Center at 7 p.m. Oct. 30. They will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the film. The showing is free to attend, and there will be free food.
