Campus crimes: Five reports of stolen bikes on campus and other crimes

1. Student's wallet stolen

An individual was robbed at the Living Learning Complex on Oct. 3, according to a campus police report written by officer Randy Phillips. The complainant was inconsistent with his statement to the officers, according to the report.

The 18-year-old's complainant said he lost his beige alligator skin wallet, which contained an Arkansas state ID, a debit card, a Chase credit card, a Capital One credit card, his U of M student ID and $3, according to the report.

2. Student's fanny pack stolen

An 18-year-old female student claimed her fanny pack was stolen while she was attending the University of Memphis carnival in front of the University Center on Oct. 3, according to a campus police report written by officer Walter Davidson on Oct. 8.

The victim said she set her fanny pack down as she was getting on one of the rides. She got off the ride and went to get her bag, and it was stolen. There is no suspect information, according to the report.

3. Visitor's items stolen from her vehicle

A 60-year-old visitor at the Community Health Building on Park Avenue reported a theft from her car, according to a campus police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson on Oct. 4.

The visitor said items were missing from her purse she left in her car in the visitor parking lot. She said she locked her car before walking in the building. There was no sign of forced entry, and the case is still under investigation, according to the report.

4. Student's U of M ID stolen and used

An 18-year old student said her U of M student ID was stolen and used on Oct. 8, according to a campus police report written by officer Randy Phillips. She last saw her student ID at 9 a.m.

The victim noticed someone using her card at the Centennial Place vending machines. She said card charges began at 10:09 a.m. and ended at 11 a.m. The victim canceled her card and said $84 worth of transactions were made, according to the report.

5. Student's video games, game console and money stolen

A 17-year-old student said he left his dorm in South Hall, and when he returned, his Xbox One, three video games and $20 had been stolen, according to a campus police report written by officer Daron Hamer on Oct. 9. The victim said he locked his room when leaving, and only the occupants from the adjoining room had access to his room.

He said his room was locked when he returned. There was no sign of forced entry, and residents in the adjoining room were unavailable, according to the report.

6. Theater building vandalized

An incident of vandalism in the Theater Building was reported to police on Oct. 14, according to a campus police report written by officer Anthony Daniels. Officers noticed graffiti on the southeast and southwest stairwells of the building.

A 45-year-old witness told campus police he heard someone laughing, according to a report written by Daniels. The witness said the door to the first-floor southwest stairwell closed shortly after.

The witness said he was en route to the basement from the first floor when he noticed graffiti on the back door of the southwest stairwell to the basement level. Further investigation revealed there to be graffiti on the soda machine and the back door to the southeast stairwell, according to the report.

7. Student's bicycle stolen

A student told campus police his bike was stolen from the back of the Living Learning Complex dorms on Oct. 8, according to a campus police report written by officer Randy Phillips.

The 18-year-old student told police the lock was on the bike, but he was not sure if he secured the bike properly. He noticed the bike was missing at 7 a.m. on Oct. 8. The bike was last seen at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5, according to the report.

8. Student's bicycle stolen

A student told campus police his bicycle was stolen from the east side of Wilder Tower on Oct. 12, according to a campus police report written by officer Brittany Dorado.

The 18-year-old victim said he returned to the same location at 12:15 a.m. and could not find his bike. The victim said he secured his bicycle with a four-digit wire lock. He did not see any evidence of a broken bicycle lock or any bicycles like his in the immediate area.

The victim said the bike was a black Cannondale valued at $500 identifiable by a broken metal bracket on the left foot pedal. The lock on the bicycle was a black Master lock valued at $15. There are no known suspects, according to the report.

9. Student's purse stolen

A student told campus police her gray Michael Kors purse was stolen from the first floor women's restroom in the University Center on Oct. 4, according to a campus police report written by officer Anthony Daniels.

The 18-year-old student said she entered the restroom at 12:45 p.m. and left the restroom to go to her vehicle on the fourth floor of the Zach Curlin parking garage, where she noticed her purse was missing at 12:50 p.m. The victim rerouted back to the restroom and did not find her purse. The victim checked the University Center desk, but the purse had not been turned in, according to the report.

10. Student Family Housing Complex vandalized

A campus residential assistant told campus police the exit gate at the Student Family Housing Complex on Park Avenue was vandalized on Oct. 9, according to a campus police report written by officer Anthony Daniels.

The assistant noticed the damage at 7 p.m. The damage was done to the left side of the gate by an individual manually raising the arm, causing it to break, according to the report.

Individuals were still able to exit the gate, and the right side functioned properly. The gate has since been repaired.

11. Student's wallet stolen, UUID used

A student told campus police his black and gray wallet was stolen from the 3rd floor of the Ned R. McWherter Library on Oct. 9, according to a campus police report written by officer Randy Philips.

The 21-year-old student noticed two charges were made on his student ID, one for $8.84 and another one for $4.25, according to the report. The victim was advised to cut his card off at the time.

12. Art building vandalized

A faculty member told campus police the Art Building was vandalized on Oct. 15, according to a campus police report written by officer John Hudgens.

The 53-year-old faculty member noticed over that weekend that an unknown person entered the building and spray painted on a furnace and on walls in room 124 and room 101, according to the report. Photos were taken by U of M police.

13. Student ID used fraudulently

A student told campus police he lost his student ID on Oct. 18, according to a campus police report written by officer Randy Philips.

The 18-year-old student attempted to use his card at the University Center when he was told he did not have sufficient funds at 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 17. The victim was told his card was used Oct. 10 at 2:05 p.m. through Oct. 14 at 9:05 p.m. The victim was told $77.65 was spent during the transactions, according to the report.

14. Student's laptop stolen

A student told campus police her laptop was stolen from the campus health center on Oct. 19, according to a campus police report written by officer John Hudgens.

The 21-year-old student said she thought it was left in the chair in the waiting area at 12:45 p.m., but she was in the exam room at the time, according to the report.

15. Student's bicycle stolen

A student told campus police his bike was stolen from outside the UC on Oct. 18, according to campus police report written by officer Claude Berry.

The 19-year-old student said his bike was locked on the UC bike rack Oct. 5, and he could not find it Oct. 6. The victim had no serial numbers and was unsure if he can locate any paperwork. There is no suspect information, according to the report.

16. Student's bicycle stolen

A student told campus police his bicycle was stolen from the east side of the Living Learning Complex on Oct. 19, according to a campus police report written by officer Emmon Fitchpatrick.

The 18-year-old student said he parked his bicycle at 12:30 p.m.,went to his room, returned back at 1:40 p.m. and returned unable to locate the bike. He said his bicycle was chain locked to the bicycle rack, according to the report.

17. Girlfriend assaults boyfriend in argument

A non-student told campus police about a domestic disturbance between him and his girlfriend at the LLC on Oct. 19, according to a campus police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson.

The 18-year-old victim said his girlfriend became upset when he put his headphones on and stopped paying attention to her, according to the report. The victim said the girlfriend began hitting and screaming at him. The victim received about a half-inch scratch to the right side of his forehead and a half-inch scratch to the left side of his chest. 

The female defendant was arrested and charged with domestic assault and transported to Jail East, according to the report.

18. Student's bicycle stolen

A student told campus police his bike was stolen from the bicycle rack on the north side of Johnson Hall on Oct. 21, according to a campus police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson.

The 24-year-old student said he returned to the bicycle rack at 6:45 p.m. and noticed his bicycle and lock were missing from the bicycle rack. The victim said he does not have any idea who could have stolen the bike, according to the report.
