Campus crime: Police report a cars vandalized, shoplifting, break-ins and fights

1. Student’s car keyed

 

Police responded to an 18-year-old student’s vandalism report April 3 after someone keyed the phrase “learn 2 park” on the right rear of her car parked in the Central Avenue parking lot, according to a police report filed by officer Anthony Black. No suspects have been found. 

 

2. A couple has a physical altercation

 

Officers responded to a disturbance at Rawls Hall on April 8, where a student and her girlfriend got into an argument, according to a police report made by officer Laron Young. Officers approached the room where incident occurred, but no one would open the door, leaving Resident Life personnel to let police in the room, according to the report. The crime report said police found the 18-year-old student and her 24-year-old girlfriend, who is not a student. The two had a physical altercation after their verbal argument. The report stated the initiator could not be determined, and they were both transported to jail for charges of simple assault and domestic violence.

 

3. Items stolen from a student’s truck

 

A 32-year-old student had items stolen April 9 from his pick-up truck on Southern Avenue, according to a police report filed by officer Robert Frans. A camera recorded the robbery and found a male African-American suspect in the victim’s car and leaving the scene after a few minutes. The report stated items were missing, but no damage was done, and no finger prints were left. The crime report said campus police assumed the truck was left unlocked, and no suspects have been found. 

 

4. Television, PlayStation and wallet taken from Carpenter resident

 

Officers responded to a burglary at Carpenter Complex on April 11, where an unknown suspect took a television, PlayStation and a wallet containing $20, according to a report filed by officer Anthony Black.

The 22-year-old student, who lives in the apartment, did not report the incident to police. His 27-year-old friend, who is not a student, reported the burglary because he returned to the room first and contacted the victim shortly after. The victims said in the report the room was vacant from 1 to 7:30 p.m, and they both said the apartment looked ransacked. No suspects have been found, according to the police report.

 

5. Employees suspect someone repeatedly shoplifts at campus bookstore

 

The manager of the University of Memphis Bookstore had video of a suspect shoplifting April 12 and assumed they were a continuous shoplifter, according to a police report by officer Chanancy Donaldson. The manager said they discovered the name of the individual when he returned to the store later in the week, and the case is currently under investigation, according to the report. 

 

6. Threats made to student by former roommate 

 

A 19-year-old student told police April 18 that her 19-year-old former roommate threatened her off campus, according to a report filed by officer Tina Crowe. The former roommate wanted to fight the victim, according to the report, and the suspect later went to the victim’s dorm at Centennial Place beating on her door, asking her to come out and fight. The case is currently under investigation.

 

7. Student’s car tire punctured

 

An 18-year-old student reported to police April 19 that her car’s tire was punctured on the south side of Midland Avenue near Patterson Street, according to a police report filed by officer Claude Berry. The victim noticed April 18 at 10 p.m. that her tire was cut through, and she said she has “no known enemies,” according to the report. No suspects have been found.
