University to host College to Career Conference

The University of Memphis’ Avron B. Fogelman Professional Development Center and division of student affairs will host a College to Career conference March 17 to assist students in making their transition into the job market.

“Students will be able to interact with local professionals through different breakout sessions, mock interviews, an etiquette lunch and a keynote speaker,” said Brian Deal, U of M coordinator of community engagement and campus partnerships.

Deal said the etiquette lunch, presented by Fogelman College of Business and Economics, will be an opportunity for students to learn proper table manners when dining with professionals. Breakfast will also be served at the conference.

“This is a great opportunity to develop professional skills, while interacting and networking with professionals who work in the city of Memphis,” Deal said.

Janice Hall, U of M alumna and senior vice president of global sales capability and fast-to-action at The Estee Lauder Companies, Inc., will be the keynote speaker.

Deal said Hall has achieved success in building strong teams and developing avenues to strengthen her organization.

“The conference will focus on three of the six student leadership and professional competencies: strategic and professional planning, communication and digital technology and teamwork and collaboration,” Deal said.

Deal said walk-ins will be accepted, although prior registration is strongly preferred.

Laurie Snyder, assistant to the dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, said the conference may aid students in the search for “that perfect job” and the strategies needed to get them employed.

“Since the job market is competitive, it is important for you to make the best first impression you can,” Snyder said.

Daniel Bureau, assistant vice president of student affairs, said employers want students with strong skills who can demonstrate effectiveness and solve problems in ways they may not learn about in the classroom.

“Opportunities such as the College to Career conference provide speakers, educational sessions and networking opportunities,” Bureau said.

The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the third floor of the University Center.

Conference registration is free, and students may register through the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement’s website.
