Braylan Gatewood, 19, was arrested for unlawfully carrying a firearm on school property when police found him in the dining area of the University Center with a loaded gun.
Multiple calls were made to University of Memphis police reporting a man carrying a firearm in the University Center dining area Feb. 5, according to a Shelby County court affidavit.
Campus police located Braylan Gatewood, 19, who admitted to having the firearm in his possession. Officers found the loaded Taurus .40-caliber pistol in Gatewood's front right pocket while he was in the UC dining area, the affidavit read.
Gatewood was arrested and sent to the Criminal Justice Complex for booking. His bond was set at $10,000.Â
No timely warning alert was made to students and staff through the LiveSafe app or through email.
There were, however, alerts made that same day reporting "an inappropriate touching incident" in front of the Ned R. McWherter library. The alert was cancelled later in the afternoon after police apprehended the suspect.
