University of Memphis students can purchase dress apparel at a discounted price Sunday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m at the Tiger Suit-Up Event, hosted by Career Services at JCPenney inside Wolfchase Galleria Mall.
Students can receive 40 percent off select men’s and women’s dress apparel and shoes. Students can register on Career Services website. They will need their U of M student ID to register and purchase clothing at the event.
Alisha Rose Henderson, director of Career Services, said the event is a great opportunity for students to get quality formal wear.
“The University of Memphis is one of several schools invited to participate in the Suit-Up events,” Henderson said. “It gives students an opportunity to get great career attire at 40 percent off.”
Henderson also said this event meets a need many students have and will help students in the long run.
“We frequently hear from students that business attire is a big need, so this is a great opportunity for students to update or begin their career wardrobes,” Henderson said. “It gives students an opportunity to get ready for the Spring Career Fair or any upcoming job interviews.”
The number one interview mistake candidates make is inappropriate wardrobe, according to a survey by Adecco, a staffing agency.
Nikki Carter, a student staff member in Career Services, said dressing well can help students in their interviews.
“A few tips I would give to students going into an interview are to act professional, to give a firm handshake and to wear a big smile,” Carter said. “Everyone gets nervous for interviews, but being dressed nice and having confidence in your looks should help the interview flow smoothly.”
When interviewing for a job or internship, dressing properly is the third most important thing to do, according to a survey by Live Career, a website that gives people interview tips.
Kayleigh Heslin, freshman business major at the U of M, said dressing nice makes a great first impression.
“I think people should always dress their best for interviews,” Heslin said. “The first thing the interviewer will notice is the way a person is dressed, and it shows what that person will bring to the table.”
Jake Davidson, junior biology major at the U of M, said students should take advantage of the event.
“Getting the proper attire for interviews and certain jobs can be expensive and pricy,” Davidson said. “That’s why it is important for students to use this event and get what they need for their future.”
