The University of Memphis men’s 4x400-meter relay team set school records in their effort at the 2018 Vanderbilt Invitational this weekend.
The team of Davon DeMoss, Ryan Champlin, Sir Newton Lee and Jarred Pasley wrapped up Saturday’s action finishing fourth in the event with a time of 3:10:53. The relay team’s time broke the previous school record by nearly 2.5 seconds. The previous record time of 3:13:19 was set at Memphis’ first indoor meet of the 2017-18 season.
The men’s distance medley relay was the Tigers’ only first-place finisher this weekend. The quartet of Pasley, Brock Ballard, Matthew Viveiros and Matthew Kamph placed first with a time of 10:13:73.
The men’s team was not the only group to have an eventful weekend. Sophomore Cera Chavez placed fourth in the women’s 200-meters with a school-record time of 24.08 seconds. Her finish beat the previous school record of 24.09 set by Kala Funderburk in 2013.
This is the second time Chavez has set a school record in the 2017-18 indoor season. She ran the women’s 60-meters in a school-record 7.39 seconds at the Vanderbilt Opener Dec. 2. That earned her first career conference indoor Athlete of the Week award. Overall, it is Chavez’s second weekly honor, as she was named the conference’s outdoor Female Athlete of the Week in May.
This weekend’s 200-meters mark is Chavez’s third overall school record. The New Mexico native ran a school-record 23.32 seconds in the outdoor 200-meters at the 2017 Memphis Invitational last April.
In other news, four Tigers posted personal best scores this weekend. Freshman Calvin Austin finished sixth in the men’s 60-meters (6.76). Junior Nicole Lawson posted a mark of 39-8 (12.09m) in the women’s triple jump. Freshman DeeNia McMiller and sophomore Parker Evans set personal bests in the women’s shot put and men’s weight throw, respectively.
