At the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards, Kanye West infamously interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, and let the world know that the award belonged to Beyoncé. In a lyric about this incident, West said in his song “Famous” that he “made that b*tch famous.”
While I will admit that calling her a b*tch is too much, he did make her more famous. In that moment, Yeezy introduced Swift and her music to a whole new audience.
Yes, she was accepting an award for Best Female Video. Yes, she had already become famous and was on her way up.
But the always entertaining Mr. West brought more ears to her music. People that did not listen to the country/pop music of Swift started to listen because they wanted to know who Kanye interrupted.
Even the president of Swift’s label, Scott Borchetta, admitted that the incident brought more attention to Swift in a 2010 interview with The Wall Street Journal.
“The Kanye incident brought attention to Taylor, to an audience that did not really know her or her music. And when they did check it out, they discovered that they really liked it,” Borchetta said.
In the entertainment industry, drama and beef can help both parties. For years, the two have gone back and forth. They even seemed to make up at one point, but that did not last.
Most recently, Swift released what seems like more disses toward Kanye in her newest album, “Reputation.” I am sure a lot of people have listened just because she disses Kanye. I know that is the only reason I did.
All this drama brought millions of eyes to the two artists over the years. But no matter what side people take, they are going to live the “good life” because “if they hate then let ‘em hate and watch the money pile up.”
