Campus crime log: Drug possession, theft and intimidation

1. Smell of marijuana at Carpenter Complex

The smell of marijuana at Carpenter Complex was reported on Nov. 8, according to a campus police report written by officer Robert Crout. Two students were found inside the apartment, with one coming out of the bathroom with marijuana residue in a container, according to the report. The case was referred to student accountability.

2. Handgun and coins stolen from vehicles at Kappa Alpha Order

Two robberies were reported at the Kappa Alpha Order (KA) house on Nov. 8, according to a campus police report written by officer Stephen Grisham. One of the victims, a 19-year-old man, said the suspect drove onto the KA parking lot and stole his handgun from his unlocked truck, according to the report. The second victim, a 19-year-old male student, said the same suspect stole a container of an assortment of coins from his unlocked 2007 Hyundai Sonata.

3. Camera stolen from vehicle in Centennial North Lot

A 21-year-old man said his vehicle was broken into, and his camera was stolen in a Centennial Place parking lot on Nov. 8, according to a police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson. The victim parked in the Centennial North Lot on at 11:30 p.m., according to the report. When he returned at 1:30 p.m., his black camera and lens inside the trunk were missing. There is no suspect information.

4. Car stolen at Living Learning Complex lot

A 19-year-old man reported his vehicle missing at the Living Learning Complex parking lot on Nov. 8, according to a campus police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson. The victim told police he parked his vehicle around 1 p.m.  When he returned to the parking lot, he said his vehicle was nowhere to be found, according to the report.

5. Assault intimidation at bank on campus

 A 35-year-old female worker at First South Bank on campus reported an angry threat from a female customer on Nov. 8, according to a police report written by officer Chanancy Donaldson. The victim told police a 47-year-old suspect walked into the bank to withdraw money from her account, according to the report. When the worker told the suspect her account was empty, the suspect began to get angry and say that she will “get†the victim and “get†the victim’s money. The worker asked her to leave and then called police. Officers could not locate the suspect.

6. Jury duty scam at Campus School

A 37-year-old female University of Memphis faculty worker reported a jury duty phone scam on Nov. 3, according to a police report written by officer Andre Fuller. The victim told police she received a message saying she needed to contact a Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy O’Neal, according to the report. When she called the number, someone informed her she missed jury duty and had multiple arrest warrants, and she was told to go to 201 Poplar Ave.

The victim told police she had not received any mail and said the man asked for her home address. The victim called the Shelby County jury commissioner and was told she did not have any summons for jury duty and that someone has been criminally impersonating as a deputy for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, according to the report.

7. Purse stolen at Carnes Avenue

A 23-year-old woman’s purse was stolen after celebrating her birthday with friends at The Bluff on Highland Street on Nov. 2, according to a campus police report written by Sgt. Rickey Moore. The victim told police she was approached by two male suspects dressed in hoodies and bandanas. The first suspect had a toy handgun, and the victim said he physically forced her purse from her without injuries, according to the report.  A witness told police the second suspect attempted to reach inside the vehicle to grab another purse but was unsuccessful. Both suspects were reported running east on Carnes Avenue towards Echles Street.

8. Attempted robbery at State Street

Two 19-year-old women were victims in an attempted robbery on 415 State St. on Nov. 5, according to a police report written by officer Stephen Grisham. The victims told police they parked their vehicle on Midland Avenue at 7:30 p.m. and were on Desoto Street when a  male suspect in a black hoodie and orange bandana over his face pointed a finger at them as if it were a gun and shouted, “Give me your shit.†The victims continued walking towards Rawls Hall, according to the report. A silver four-door sedan pulled up shortly after on Patterson Street, with a woman yelling for the suspect to get one of the women’s purses, according to the report. The suspect ignored the woman in the vehicle, got inside and drove north towards Patterson Street, according to the report.

9. Lambuth Campus: Man charged with possession of crack cocaine and hydrocodone

A 38-year-old man was charged with possession of five rocks of crack cocaine and hydrocodone at Varnell Jones Hall at the U of M Lambuth Campus on Nov. 3, according to a police report written by officer Jeremey Smith. The suspect complained that someone shot at him and appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants or narcotic drugs, according to the report. The suspect admitted to taking 10 milligrams of hydrocodone and smoking marijuana, and officers found five rocks of crack cocaine in his possession, according to the report. He was arrested and charged for possession of the substances.
