College campuses nationwide have been under controversy recently after riots have broken out the past year in response to universities bringing ultra-conservative speakers on campus.
One significant example was when the University of California at Berkeley cancelled a Milo Yiannopolous speech following protest riots. Some argue this is the academic world shutting down anyone who disagrees with them, while some say they shut down the event for the safety of students.
UC Berkeley is planning on hosting “Free Speech Week†starting Sunday, and speakers for the week include Ann Coulter, Steve Bannon and, once more, Milo Yiannopolous, according to a press release from the university chancellor.
The Daily Helmsman’s guest political columnists from the U of M College Republicans and College Democrats offered their opinions on the issue of suppressed freedom of speech on college campuses.
