Tennessee Sec. of State to speak at U of M

Students can attend a free and informative luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Poplar Room of the University Center with speaker Tre Hargett, Tennessee’s current Secretary of State.

The University of Memphis’ Student Government Association will host the luncheon and will include a free sandwich buffet.

“This is a great opportunity for students to interact with and learn from someone who represents them within their own state government,” Landon Brownell, SGA’s secretary of government relations, said.

Hargett will speak about his position as Secretary of State, and various aspects of his job as a representative for Tennesseans.  He is originally from Ripley, Tennessee, and is a graduate of the U of M.  Hargett became the Secretary of State in 2009 after being elected by the Tennessee General Assembly.

Hargett was reappointed in both 2013 and 2017.  He currently serves on 15 Tennessee boards and commissions, two of which he is the presiding member.  His office serves and oversees every branch of Tennessee’s state government.

Hargett will answer questions at the end of his lecture, Brownell said. All students are encouraged to attend.
