Harvey impacts campus and city

TornadoWarning1

Rain fell on campus Thursday as sirens prompted students to take cover in the basement of buildings like Manning Hall.

Some students received a TigerText at 1:11 p.m. that read “Tornado warning is for SW Shelby County and does NOT include the main campus, etc. Please tune to local news for detailed info.â€

The message was sent during the final day the TigerText service was available. The same message was also sent through the LiveSafe app, which will now be the only campus alert service.

Around 2:30 p.m. local television news reported several car wrecks had occurred on I-40, and one was fatal. The driver of a car hydroplaned and crashed into a tractor trailer, according to WMC Action News 5.

Rain continued late into the night near campus.
