This past weekend many NFL players took knees or locked arms on sidelines during the national anthem in protest against injustices in the country. This left many angry that politics had invaded football, while others congratulated the athletes for standing up for what they believe.
Even large NFL sponsor Papa John’s joined the debate, stating, “In America, we should respect those who have served AND stand up to injustice. We need to work together to be better.”
This poses a question: should politics and sports stay separated or does association intertwine them automatically? Are there other scenarios when politics should not be a topic of discussion?
Reporter Hira Qureshi asked U of M students these questions, a veteran sent letter to the editor to The Daily Helmsman and representatives from the College Democrats and College Republicans reacted to the NFL protests through opinion pieces.
