Where is Migos, U of M Spring Fling?

This has been a trying semester for Memphians who would like to see Atlanta-based trap music come to life before their very eyes.

First, a petition with 69,475 signatures to get Lady Gaga off the Super Bowl Halftime Show stage and replace her with Migos apparently didn’t change the minds of the NFL. Then, Beale Street Music Fest announced none of their artists for their 2017 lineup were Migos. Now, when the world needed them most, the Migos have disappeared.

Well, not really.

It was brought to my attention moments after posting my last Migos-related editorial on The Daily Helmsman Twitter that the trio of Quavo, Takeoff and Offset will be performing at FedEx Forum “literally†the day before Music Fest ’17.

But here’s the thing, I’m a millennial, and we’re notorious for being entitled. Also, I’m a millennial, and we’re notorious for being broke. I want my Migos in an outdoor venue, and I want the experience to be free. This is why, even though SAC has booked Rich Homie Quan (an Atlanta-based trap artist) to perform this Saturday at the U of M Spring Fling, I am still not satisfied. The people want Migos.

Quan is the rapper most famous for 2013’s “Type of Way.†But you know who really makes me feel some type of way? Migos. Are you seriously going to tell me that this one-hit-wonder can hold a candle to the three-hit-wonder(ers) that are Migos. “Versace,†“Handsome and Wealthy†and “Bad and Boujee†changed the game ...or at least changed my attitude while I was stuck in traffic on the way home from class many times (“Wishy Washy†is the Migos deep cut that only true trap-hipsters appreciate).

Saturday, we’ll have Quan, Travis Porter and Metro Boomin, but as it stands, none of the Migos. Sad. There is hope, however. Migos’ 2014 track “YRH†featured Rich Homie Quan and was even produced by Metro Boomin. That means two of the guys who will be on-stage for the U of M Spring Fling Saturday night have worked closely with Migos in the past.

Quan, Mr. Boomin – if you guys are reading this, it would make this campus newspaper editor very happy if you could smuggle Quavo, Takeoff and/or Offset into your luggage before you arrive at Memphis International Airport this weekend. A couple surprise onstage appearances would be simply delightful. I’ll be there waiting to celebrate the near-end of the semester right.

Or, you know, my mom has tickets to “The Sound of Music†at the Orpheum, and that will also be pretty lit.
