Oasis on Highland are having an open mic night starting on Tuesday. This method attracted more customers to the hookah lounge.

The manager of Oasis Hookah Lounge, a popular cafe in the University of Memphis area, has decided to host a series of monthly open mic nights dubbed “The Chill.â€

Located at 663 S. Highland St., Oasis is often described as “a place for anyone in Memphis.†Reco Doss, manager of Highland Oasis, hopes that talented U of M students step up to the mic and showcase their talent to the “open-minded and motivating†Oasis audience.

“We look for everyone with talent,†Reco Doss, manager of Highland Oasis said. “We want singers, rappers, dancers, artists, poetry acts, even trombone players- especially University of Memphis students. We encourage all talents to come and showcase.â€

In addition to open mic performers who will be given three minute spots, featured artists will also perform for 10 minutes each. The featured artists for Tuesday’s event include Staar Queenkong, Sir Jerold French, Tres Ventura, Godbody Jones, Jizzy Blanco, and Shinra Don. The Chill is scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m.

As a hookah lounge Oasis offers free Wi-Fi service, an abundance of hookah flavors, as well as food and drinks to a wide variety of visiting members. These visitors tend to represent all different ages, ethnicities, and culture groups.

“Oasis is a very comfortable environment where people can express themselves,†U of M student Akilah Wilson said. “I love it there, the vibes are great, the hookahs are yummy and relaxing, and The Chill’s talents are incredible.â€

Oasis’s goal with The Chill is to provide a venue for local and upcoming artists to network and expose themselves to others who share similar passions. The event is hosted by local recording artist Jayveetheprince.

“The networking opportunities that The Chill has to offer go above and beyond sitting behind a computer screen posting your talents online,†he said. “By coming and performing, an artist has the ability to open doors he or she never thought possible. That’s why I host. To help those who want a voice, get a voice.â€
