Students are likely to laugh out loud Monday night when MTV2’s Lil Duval takes the stage at the University of Memphis’ homecoming comedy show.
Lil Duval, or Roland Powell, has been in the stand-up comedy scene for over a decade. In 2005, he was a semifinalist on the BET competition, “Coming to the Stage.” Since then, he has starred in MTV2 shows such as “Guy Code” and “Hip-Hop Squares.”
He has also made cameos in music videos such as T.I.’s “Rubberband Man” and an appearance in Three Six Mafia’s independent film, “Choices II: The Setup.” Currently, he hosts a video show on MTV entitled “Ain’t That America.”
U of M students like engineering tech major Jamon Harvell are excited for the show. The senior said he could not wait for Lil Duval to perform.
“I’m a big fan of his,” Harvell said. “The main reason I like him is because we are both from Jacksonville, so it’s a hometown connection.”
Harvell expects other students to be excited for the show. “I remember when I first came here, we couldn’t get big names like T.I., Torey Lanez, K Camp and Lil Duval to come to campus and perform,” Harvell said. “It’s kind of cool to see things change. I really think the freshmen will be excited to go. Should be a huge turnout.”
Senior psychology major Kaila Garrett agrees.
“Yeah, I’m pretty excited to go,” she said. “I remember him from Guy Code. He’s a big name.”
Sophomore business major Dymetria Jones said she would attend the show as long as it’s free.
“We’re broke and struggling students,” she said. “We can’t afford these expensive events. We barely can buy books. If they make the wristbands free, I’ll go, but if not, I’ll have to pass.”
The comedy show will begin at 7 p.m Monday night in the Rose Theatre. Students will indeed need wristbands to enter.
The ticket box opens at 4 p.m. for students and 5 p.m. for non-students with doors opening at 6 p.m.
Students can contact the Student Activity Council for more details.
