Silent disco, beer pong and an open bar will be in the UC Ballroom at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
The Student Activities Council will host “Party with a Purpose” to create alcohol awareness and show the dangers that coincide with drinking.
Tonika Ingram, SAC president, said that hosting the party is a fun way to tackle a “touchy” subject.
“We are using things that are usually associated with alcohol but we are using them to teach a lesson,” Ingram said. “It’s really good for a campus like ours.”
“Party with a purpose” is a phrase used for fundraisers on campuses across the country, according to Ingram.
“The catch-22 is that it’s a party, but there has to be some kind of awareness going on,” Ingram said. “Different groups do it for issues like breast cancer or sexual assault.”
SAC is teaming up with the Health Center, Up Til Dawn, and the sorority and fraternity affairs office for the party.
“The Health Center is bringing drunk goggles to show the dangers of drinking and driving,” Ingram said. “Michael Marino, the sorority and fraternity affairs advisor, is certified in alcohol awareness training, so he will be over the beer pong game. Up Til Dawn is doing the charitable thing, so they will have cans at the bar so you could pay for a drink and donate to St Jude.”
Everyone at the party will get a pair of headphones for the silent disco, where music will come from the headphones and not out of a huge speaker.
“It’s really fun when you take your headphones off and everyone is dancing and singing,” Ingram said. “We did it a few times last year and it was popular.”
The open bar will be serving juice and showing infographics that will show the equivalent if it was alcohol, Ingram said.
“We will also have a beer pong game with water,” Ingram said. “It will be like a trivia game, so if you make one in and get the trivia right, you can take the cup away.”
