Free food for starving students: Three places to get food at the start of next week

Many times, free food can be a gamble. Parts of the meal may be disappointing, while others will surpass your expectations.

Last week, there was a free “home-cooked” meal offered from an off campus group. The chicken in the main course was unexciting, but the chocolate chip brownies sprinkled with powdered sugar were on point. Salty snacks and chips are a usual side to burgers and hot dogs at a cookout. Watermelon was added as a side to one of the free food options last week, making a surprising sweet side for a summer cook-out.

Fresh veggies and hummus are rolled into pita bread in the Middle Eastern wrap that has returned to convenience stores. Aramark’s resident district manager Chuck Wigington said he was disappointed his staff did not have them out at the beginning of this school year because this is one of their vegetarian-friendly options.

While there are many food options on campus, the wait can be unbearable. The Chick-fil-A line was backed up to the campus P.O.D. convenience store on Wednesday.

Many students are tired of the long lines and expensive fast food options provided on campus. Thankfully, some student organizations provide free food to students at their events. Not all of the free food will be good or without disappointment, but students have options. Save your dining dollars. Meet some new friends. Find ways to be involved in campus life, and most importantly, fill your belly.

Pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and squash casserole

Every Monday, Soma has a weekly meal at the Christian Student Center at 3611 Midland Ave. Next week they will serve pork tenderloin, mashed potatoes and squash casserole. The meal will be served at 6 p.m.

Maybe Domino’s

The College Republicans are hosting an event Tuesday where Senator Bob Corker’s staff representative, Nick Kistenmacher, will speak about ending modern slavery and human trafficking. Although, the organization could not confirm exactly what they will be serving, they did tell us they have Domino’s pizza as well as drinks “free, of course.” The event begins at 4 p.m. in the UC Bluff Room.

Probably BBQ, pizza or sub sandwiches

If the options at the College Republicans event are disappointing, there is another option for free food later that evening. Reformed University Fellowship has a weekly large group at 7:45 in the UC Beale Room. “We have free food every Tuesday night before our time of worship,” Laura Gunnufsen, RUF intern, said. Usually the meal is either BBQ, pizza or sub sandwiches. However, they did not confirm what they will serve this Tuesday.
