Students 'robbed' on intramural field

Four University of Memphis students had their belongings stolen on Aug. 21 while playing on the intramural soccer field near the Recreation Center.

According to a campus police report written by officer Robert Frans, the four students were throwing a football when the suspect walked by a set of bleachers and took a wallet and an iPhone. The suspect was described as a 5-foot-10 African-American man. The suspect left jogging southbound.

Business major Marquavious Chism was one of the victims. The junior described the suspect as an “older looking male.” “

I don’t think he was a student,” Chism said. “He looked to be about 25. I couldn’t get the best look at him because it was late in the afternoon. We haven’t gotten our stuff back.”

Chism said the stolen wallet contained about $50, and the suspect took two phones.

Ray Craft, interim assistant chief of campus police, called the alleged robbery a “very bold move.”

“If you think about it, the crime happened around 8:15 p.m., so there was still some daylight outside,” he said. “It took some guts on the part of the suspect to do what he did. It was an unfortunate situation.”

According to the police report, the suspect had a dark complexion, shaved hair and was wearing a white shirt with black Adidas shorts at the time of the incident.

Craft said there was possibly one more person with the suspect at the time.

“There hasn’t been any more information that we have received at this time,” he said. “We do know that [the suspect] was headed south towards Goodman and Spottswood.”
