The University of Memphis will honor several of its faculty members during its Faculty Convocation luncheon.
It is being held on Friday, April 29, at noon in the University Center Fountain View Suite.
During the luncheon, U of M faculty members from several different departments will be honored with awards that recognize excellence in teaching and research.
One such award is the Willard R. Sparks Eminent Faculty Award, which will be awarded to the Department of Earth Sciences’ Roy Vans Arsdale.
“The Eminent Faculty Award is presented by the Board of Visitors to an individual who has made exceptional and sustained contributions to scholarly achievement, teaching and service, bringing honor and recognition to the University,” according to a press release issued by the U of M.
The U of M will also award Alumni Association Distinguished Teaching Awards to four faculty members, including faculty from the English, History, Political Sciences and Biological Sciences departments.
In addition to honoring faculty members with awards for excellence in teaching, the U of M will be honoring faculty members’ merit in research within several disciplines by awarding them the Alumni Association Distinguished Research Awards.
Research awards recipients will be awarded for their achievements and distinguished research in their respective disciplines, including distinguished research in Science, Engineering and Mathematics; research in Social Sciences, Business and Law; research in the Humanities; distinguished achievement in the Creative Arts; and excellence in Engaged Scholarship, according to the press release.
The U of M will also award the Thomas W. Briggs Foundation Award during the Faculty Convocation.
Recipients will include Denis Grẻlẻ, from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and Joanne Rhodes, from the Department of Physics and Materials Science.
“The Briggs Award recognizes teaching excellence at the undergraduate level and overall commitment to undergraduate education,” according to the press release. “Established in 1996, it is named for the founder of Welcome Wagon International.”
