U of M kicks off Dunk-A-Frat

University of Memphis students will get ready to dunk their fellow fraternity members in water April 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the University Center Alumni Mall.

The U of M Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity sponsors the event.

“The Dunk-A-Frat event is an annual event that helps with the chapter’s travel funds,” said Teniesha Pender, president of the Theta Psi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi, and political science and history major.

“Students will pay $2 to dunk a member of their choice. The main goal for the event is to network with different organizations and students, all while fundraising for the chapter,” she said.

The Dunk-A-Frat event will feature individuals from the Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. as well as members from the Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity.

While the members from the two fraternities wait to meet their watery doom, each student will call them out, and the member chosen will walk to the dunk tank. The student will press the button on the tank and watch the member take a dive into the water.

“This is the event’s third year in action, and I expect it to be funfilled and positive,” Pender said.

“It is a great networking event and fundraiser for the chapter. Students should care about this event because the funds help benefit our conferences that we go to every year, which is a part of our traveling funds,” she said.

Pender said these conferences help develop their leadership skills to help make the University of Memphis a better educational and social institution. Pender feels very confident about this event because it has attracted many students in the past.

The event has attracted the attention of Terrica Parker, junior engineering major, and her friends.

“I didn’t know anything abut it at first, but now I want to go because it sounds like it would be kinda fun,” said Parker.

“I feel like it should be free because you’re just throwing somebody in the water, but then again it’s cheap, and I’m a cheap person, so it works out okay,” she said.

Nichole Cheatham, senior chemistry major, agrees with Parker.

“I’ve never heard of it nor have I been, but it does sound like fun,” Cheatham said. “I would definitely go, and the $2 is a reasonable price, compared to the other events that charge you $5 to $10,” she said.
