University of Memphis guard Avery Woodson told ESPN Monday afternoon he has committed to play at Butler University and eligible to play for the Bulldogs immediately.

Woodson, who is graduating this spring and thus qualifies as a graduate transfer, made visits to VCU and Butler before picking the Bulldogs.

The junior guard was the fifth-leading scorer on Memphis’ 2014-15 squad as he averaged 9.6 points per game and shot 43 percent from 3-point range, which was third best in the American Athletic Conference. He also made 77 3-pointers this season, which was the fifth most made in a season in Tiger history.

Though Memphis announced the hire of Tubby Smith last Thursday, it seemed to have no effect on Woodson’s decision to leave, who announced his decision to transfer last month. The U of M now has six open scholarships to fill ahead of next season.

Woodson started 15 of 32 games this season, and he missed the final two games of the Tigers’ season. Including Memphis’ loss to UConn in the AAC tournament championship.

In 64 total games for the Blue and Gray, Woodson averaged 8.8 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.
