The Memphis chapter of Empowered Men of Color won a national award Jan. 23 at the Black Student Leadership Conference in College Station, Texas.
Malcolm Dorsey, a member of the chapter, said he felt great accomplishment when he accepted the award on behalf of the U of M group.
“I accepted the award on behalf of previous and current members that have worked hard on and off campus to make this all possible,” Dorsey said.
The University of Memphis chapter was recognized with the Student Program Spotlight Award. This honor comes in part because of Dorsey’s leadership role in helping to unite African-American students and strengthen leadership skills.
Dorsey’s chapter led a men’s conference that exemplified empowerment and commitment to serving the student body at large, according to Dorsey.
Groups from neighboring schools also attended the conference, such as Southwest Tennessee Community College, LeMoyne-Owen and Arkansas State.
“This year we really wanted to step up the chapter’s advertising around campus and bridge the gap between similar groups around the surrounding areas,” Dorsey said.
Empowered Men of Color promotes awareness of issues affecting the African-American community and strives to create better role models in society, according to the U of M’s website.
“This was a great accomplishment for myself and the University, but I also feel like this is only the beginning,” Dorsey said. “I feel inspired to do more and create even better ideas for the upcoming years.”
