The Dos and Don'ts of professional dress

The Career and Internship Expo will allow students to apply at dozens of major corporations on Wednesday at the University Center. But students need to dress professionally in order to represent themselves well in front of the various companies.

Tammy Haley, Career Services employer recruitment specialist, opened up about what students should wear, and how to make a great first impression on the day of their interview.

“Students need to present themselves professionally,” Haley said. “Do not wear pants hanging around the ankles. When they walk in there, this will be their first contact with the employer. Dress conservatively. Do not seek to grab attention. Have them concentrate on your intellect and personality.”

Students on campus shared what they should wear for an interview. Most, seemed to be on the right mindset for what they should do, and how they should act when they meet future employers.

“I believe your presentation is an important aspect,” student, Kevan Hatamzadeh said. “Your presentation shows who you are. It represents the kind of effort that you put in.”

Hatamzadeh also likes to research the company and see how he can benefit them before he goes into an interview. He likes to be relatable.

“I got a job once because the owner liked my shoes,” Hatamzadeh said.

Many students claimed that this would be their first impression with the company so they had to dress nice. Other students stated that they needed to make eye contact with companies and to remain themselves. All wanted to be professional and well dressed.

“Dress appropriate and presentable, you wouldn’t wear something you wouldn’t want your parents to see,” student, Kaya Bayani said.

Some even shared that their own outfits they were wearing to school were not what they would wear to an interview.

“The outfit I have on is very unprofessional,” student Olivia Seay said. “I would never wear a t-shirt or leggings into an interview. I would probably have my hair fixed too. I honestly think it makes you look organized and respectable when you are dressed nice, it shows that you are taking it seriously.”

The Career and Internship Expo, hosted by Career Services, works towards preparing students for their future by holding a fair that allows them to use their communication skills and meet future employers. Bring a resume and prepare to speak about your qualifications with various companies.

“It will give them face time one on one with companies,” Haley said. “It’s good practice even if they are not seeking a job. Go out and make contacts. It’s a good experience for students to put themselves out there.”

Career Services aims to educate and empower students of their careers and future job opportunities to better set them for life. They work towards connecting students to companies and setting up partnerships.

The Career Services department hopes that students will come out and be a part of the fair on Wednesday, March. 4. They want students to meet future employers to set them on a successful path for their future.
