Fantasy, science fiction, and comics return this weekend for Mid-South con

The Mid-South Con is one of the oldest and largest multi-genre fantasy, science fiction, comics and video game conventions in the South. Many different events will be held during the convention, which will hopefully bring out more attendees and reach a wider audience.

This years con will hopefully be just as much fun and as big as last years,” Chad Armstrong, a Mid-South Con regular, said. “Last year was a lot of fun with the masquerade, gaming tournaments and dealer room, but this year I’m more looking forward to the ‘Under the Sea’ dance, which hopefully won’t be a bust.”

The Mid-South Con has always been famous for the its plethora of events that transpire throughout the weekend not to mention the dealer room that houses many vendors selling comic books, figurines and other collectibles that would fit anyone’s interest.

“Last year I bout a couple of graphic novels and other things,” Armstrong said. “I mean there’s something for everyone in the room, and if not then you should just go and have fun with the multiple of events that are being held throughout the weekend.”

Some of the big events for the weekend include, the annual masquerade where people dress up in masks and costume, the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Super Smash Bros. tournaments and panels ran by a multiple of special guests.

Some of the special guests include Cory Doctorow who is the co-editor of the weblog Boing Boing and a contributor of the New York Times and The Guardian. Another guest is Ethan Van Sciver who is best known for his work on the famous comic book series Green Lantern.

Many other guests will be there with expertise in costume design, art, science and gaming. No matter where one’s interests are in there will be someone there that will share them.

“I’ve been going to the Mid-South Con since I was a teenager,” Laura Smith, host of the paranormal investigation panel. “Since I was going so much, I decided to make an event so folks could come out and share in my passion.”

Including Smith’s panel there will be other small ones like a Doctor Who panel and even a Taekwondo demonstration and class that will be open for people to join.

“This year should be a great year with hopefully new faces,” Smith said. “This weekend we will see how big it’s actually going to be, but I can’t wait for people to come out.”

The Mid-South Con will be held this weekend on March 20-22. Tickets at the door are $40 for the whole weekend or $20 for a single day. People are encouraged to go out and support the con where there is sure to be a fun filled weekend and many memories to be made.
