Fashion Moguls Memphis, a campus organization, will hold modeling auditions Jan. 28-30, and Feb. 2-4 in the University Center.
The auditions are for their post-spring break fashion show titled “Destination: Fashion Takes Flight.” Ladies and gentleman are welcome to try out. The organization encourages diversity amongst their models to match the diversity of fashion.
“We’re mainly looking for originality,” Christina Dang, president and senior fashion merchandising major, said.
The auditions give students an opportunity to embrace their differences and be comfortable enough to show them. It’s understood that most won’t be professional models, but anyone who is interested is encouraged to come out.
Auditions are something to take advantage of since Memphis doesn’t offer a lot of modeling gigs Dang said. They’re also a way for students to have fun and be part of a large-scale campus event.
“This is a good opportunity for exposure,” Dang said. “A lot of people want modeling experience, and this is a good way to get it.”
Fashion Moguls Memphis is an RSO, created to give University of Memphis students a creative outlet. It was an initiative to provide something tangible for students to showcase their creative skills and bring them to life Dang said. It offers a chance to be around like-minded students, to network, and learn from others.
The group is set on creating an inviting but effective atmosphere at auditions. The executive board is deemed on making sessions organized and professional.
“Even as students, we have to set an example,” Dang said. “We want them to feel like it’s a real audition but without so much pressure.”
Dang said the organization is advocating people come out, even if they don’t see themselves as model material. They’re not limiting prospects to people who only fit model stereotypes.
“Go for it,” Dang said. “Somebody may see something in you that you may not see in yourself.”
“You may the puzzle piece we are looking for,” Jovita McDowell, member and sophomore international business, said. “Don’t count yourself out without trying.”
Participants are encouraged to avoid nervousness. Instead they’re being asked to step out their shells and break their shyness.
“To anyone that’s nervous I would tell them that we’re a very friendly organization, and don’t let nerves get in the way,” McDowell said. “This can be a great experience.”
A foundation in modeling will be offered to those who will take advantage of this. It could be the beginning of a portfolio for some and a continuation for others.
“Fashion Moguls Memphis’ goal is to give everyone the opportunity to know if this is something they could actually do or be a part of,” Gerrin Murray, vice president and senior business professional studies major, said.
In the time leading up to the event, members plan on actively promoting auditions and the show. All agree that personal invites are the best approach.
“That would be both a compliment and acknowledgment that I see potential,” Murray said.
Dang feels that taking the time to talk to people is more motivation rather than handing out handbills.
“Taking the extra step to make them want to come leaves a lasting impression,” Dang said.
Hopefuls will receive more info about the fashion show once they arrive at auditions. The organization wants them to be fully aware of what they will be committing to. The goal of providing more information will be to relive pressure, ignite excitement, and make it an overall smooth experience.
