Education career fair to be held

The University of Memphis Career Services Office and the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences have planned the Education Career Fair in the hopes of connecting University students and Alumni to career opportunities offered by local and regional school districts. The Fair will be held in the University Center Ballroom on Wednesday, Feb.18 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Employer Recruitment Specialist Tammy Haley often invites representatives from various school districts to the University of Memphis for this event. Districts of interest attending the Education Job Fair this time are coming from as far away as Atlanta and even Florida. Haley shared how rewarding, and at times effortless, it is to receive attention from these school districts.

“A lot of times these districts will reach out to us,” Haley said. “Memphis has an excellent education department and an excellent reputation. We try to capitalize on that.”

Haley also explained exactly how hopeful students should prepare themselves for this unique networking opportunity.

“We want students to bring many copies of their resume and to be ready to give that quick little elevator speech introducing themselves,” Haley said, “It’s really just about selling themselves to a potential employer.”

Haley added that students and Alumni should come dressed in something they would wear to an interview and stressed again that students should bring several copies of their resumes. She also encourages attendees to make great contacts and be ready to work. Without releasing any names Haley was able to confirm the past success of the University of Memphis Education Career Fair and it’s specific goals to give the most students the best opportunities The University of Memphis Career Services can.

“For a fact we know that students have gone on to get jobs because of this event. It also happens with alumni,” Haley said, “We know that a lot of students have made great contacts and gone on to teaching positions.”

Though the event is not terribly exclusive, it is closed to the general public. However, it is free to University students and alumni. Haley explained the expected turnout and how more University attendees are more than welcome.

“We right now have 32 people signed up, our limit is 40,” Haley said, “If we get over 40 that would be great. We might have to reserve more space.”
