Navigator Records look to develop local talent

Navigator Records is a tech-based startup company with the capacity to develop artists, entrepreneurs, graphic designers and videographers. Khaliq Muhammad, a senior political science major, is the founder of the company, with a mission to inspire and create. The company is open to anyone in the community to come out and enhance their talents.

Navigator Records wants to create different types of projects to give people an opportunity to demonstrate their talents.

“Especially being at the University of Memphis, we wanted to give students a place to go and create,” Muhammad said. “That’s why we set up the company so close to campus.”

Muhammad compared Navigator Records to Stax Records.

“Stax Records was funded by sacrifice, someone believing in the vision,” he said. “It’s the same with Navigator Records, we believe in what we’re doing, and the art that we are giving to the world.”

Muhammad said the company wants to include as many talented students as they can in the process.

“We’re looking for interns, engineers, artists, graphic designers, models, videographers…anyone who is interested in entertainment technology, music, film etc.,” he said.

Navigator Records began last fall in 2013, the same year when Muhammad started recording music for the first time.

“I recorded a song called ‘Love Campaign’, which is an R&B record,” Muhammad said. “From then on, I noticed that I really enjoyed doing what I was doing, and as part of the entertainment process and success as a whole, is that you invest in yourself. You have to invest in your vision, and make it become a reality.”

Muhammad wanted to develop a business that’s low cost entry with a high yield. “It’s worth it, because we get to record our art,” he said. “Profit is going to come along with that, but the number one goal is to inspire students, inspire the people of Memphis, and provide a facility where people can come and create,” Muhammad said.
