Police investigating fourth robbery near U of M area in two months

For the fourth time in the last two months a robbery was committed on or around the University of Memphis campus. Two men, armed with handguns, took personal items from a Marvis Gray, a 20-year-old U of M student, on Sept. 6 at 4:30 p.m. The robbery took place north of the recreation center in the South Parking Lot.

“I was on the U of M campus when two guys came out of nowhere and robbed me,” Gray said.

The two men involved were both described as 5-foot-11 inch black males and could be between 20 to 25 years old. One was described as heavy set, dark complexion, wearing a white Polo ball cap, white Polo shirt, baggy blue jeans and a silver handgun. The other was medium build, light complexion, medium length curly hair, wearing a grey tee shirt and baggy blue jeans, the police report said.

“They took my wallet, phone and keys from me,” Gray said.

Both suspects fled in a white Dodge Magnum driven by a black female and fled in an unknown direction, according to the police report.

This will be the fourth incident since the start of August in which a person near or around a U of M campus has been victimized.

There were incidents on Aug. 1, Aug. 10 and Aug. 19 that all resulted in campus alerts being issued. The one of Aug. 19 has been solved.

Each robbery involved a handgun and similar subjects ranging from ages 17 to 29. In a previous interview, U of M Police Chief Bruce Harber denied that the incidents were linked.

According to the police services section of the U of M website, the U of M's campus features many "safety phones" at terminals marked with blue lights. These phones dial directly to Police Services.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Memphis Police Department, who is investigating this incident in coordination with U of M Police Services, at 901-545-2677
