The University of Memphis Student Leadership and Involvement office will be holding aStudent Involvement Fair on Aug. 25 at 3:15 p.m. at the University Center Alumni Mall.
“The Student Involvement Fair is an opportunity for Registered Student Organizations to showcase what they do, and to provide information to new and returning students about how to get involved,” Laura Engelman, Coordinator of Student Events and Programs at the University of Memphis, said.
At the Student Involvement Fair, students will be able to come up to the Registered Student Organization, or RSO, booths to pick up information from that organization.
“The number (of RSOs) varies every year,” Engelman said. “During the 2013-2014 academic year, there were about 250 registered student organizations.”
Several community leaders from the Memphis area also set up booths at the Student Involvement Fair to “offer students involvement opportunities in the city of Memphis.”
While some students have trouble deciding whether to get involved on campus or not, Engelman said it is very important to get involved, and that it connects you to campus, helps you meet new people, and contributes to the full college experience.
“The Office of Student Leadership and Involvement offers many different opportunities for involvement including Student Activities, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Community Service, and Leadership Education Programs,” Engelman said. This variety of groups also helps broaden the choices for students who are looking to get involved.
Michael Warren, a 22-year-old recent graduate of the University of Memphis, was a member of the Asian American Association, or AAA.
“I really enjoyed the time I spent with AAA,” Warren said. “I had several friends in the organization when I started, but I also got to make some new friends as I continued to be a part of AAA.”
Warren said that the AAA helped him expand and broaden his knowledge of the Asian American culture as well as helping him getting involved on campus, and that The Student Involvement Fair really helped introduce him to the AAA.
Whether it is a fraternity or sorority, an honor society, or an academic or professional club, the Student Involvement Fair is an easy way for these Registered Student Organizations to make a first impression on students.
